Children of Men (2006)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
Set in 2027, within civil war-torn England, when women are no longer fertile, a former activist named Theo, played by Clive Owen (Sin City), agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant African girl to a sanctuary at sea, hoping the birth of her child may help scientists save the future of humankind. Meanwhile, a sect of rebels looks to intercept them before reaching the coast, hoping the child will unite their movement and uprising against the reigning government. The picture has very intense and original action sequences, but most of the film’s beats are predictable. It has a wonderful production design and director Alfonso Curan (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) maintained a nice concept for shooting the picture. When Theo runs, we run. When Theo ducks, we duck, as if he’s protecting the audience as well. This was a nice science fiction movie that wasn’t about the science fiction. It was about how the fighting only stops when there’s hope for the future. This was captured in a battle scene between the military and rebel fighters. Plenty of death in the skirmish, but as soon as everyone sees Theo escort the girl, who had given birth, out of the attacked and ravaged building, the fighting immediately stops. All anyone can do is watch the baby with wide eyes. Some reach out and caress it. Once Theo and the children are out of sight, the fighting resumes as before. It was a very strong message for the film to carry. This was the best film from this director, as far as I’m concerned. It wouldn’t hurt to see this one on the big screen. I really enjoyed it, and it choked me up at a couple points. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
