Date Movie (2006)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
I freely admit that the only reason why I went to this movie is because I am a big Buffy The Vampire TV show fan and Alyson Hannigan, or Willow from Buffy portrays the main character in this God-awful piece of crap of a film. However, even my passion for wanting to support actors from one of my favorite TV shows isn't enough to like, tolerate, or hell, even dislike this movie. Those that brought you Scary Movie have murdered the genre of the spoof movie, the two people that left that franchise to create this movie obviously were the least talented of the group, and that is pathetic.
Julia Jones, portrayed by Alyson Hannigan (American Pie,) is an overweight girl who works in a restaurant for her Greek father Frank Jones, played by Eddie Griffin (Deuce Bigalo movies) (yes that is a black man portraying a Greek father, throw in the fact that the wife is Indian, dot not feather, and the sister is Asian, and you can see what the movie is all about.) Julia falls for a young man, who is eating lunch, Grant Fonckyerdoder (yes that is the name,) portrayed by Adam Campbell (You Are Here.) She decides to find the date doctor, Hitch, and blah blah blah blah. Sorry but I can't continue on anymore with the plot. Needless to say, find every smash romantic comedy over the past five years and this movie is trying to spoof it. The movies they are spoofing include My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Hitch, Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers and some others I am sure I haven't seen.
This is the part of my review where I try to mention something good. Well, I can't. There were a few giggles in it but overall nothing close to even the Scary Movie movies and that is sad. I will say that Hannigan tries to make the movie work but to be honest I don't know why she would be in a movie that satire's romantic comedies. She has already been in three of them, i.e. the American Pie franchise. I know she has a good TV career going and I know she had almost all of the screen time, which again is good to show that she does have talent, but does this movie have to be so horrible? It's not her fault. The blame for this horrible movie falls squarely at the feet of the director and writer.
Jason Friedberg and Adam Seltzer are the two men responsible for this colossal dump in the toilet of bad movies. Satire movies can be approached in two ways. One, they can have the main character as a clown and the rest of the characters real, like the Pink Panther movies and Ace Ventura. The second is when the characters are written over the top but they spoof certain parts of movies but have their own story line, for example, the Airplane movies and probably the greatest example would be The Naked Gun franchise. Friedberg and Seltzer do neither, and instead they have unbelievable situations with unbelievable characters and the story jumps from one satire to another never have its own story. They provide the laughter by some semi-funny scenes that usually involve grossing people out. I also like to not that even though it is no longer acceptable to make fun of minorities or old people, it's still cool in the American culture to laugh at fat people, even though half the population is fat. Yeah ignorance!
This movie is just a waste of celluloid and of time. If I was any kind of man with dignity or more importantly, the time and money, I would buy a plane ticket, fly out to California, and personally beat the sh*t out of Friedberg and Seltzer. But since I have none of that I will continue to waste my money on movie's like this and kick my own ass latter for not learning from the first mistake, or the second or the third, etc.
