This movie is a lot like “Working Girl” in message and feel but not in its plot.

A young naïve woman named Andy, played by Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mountain), comes to New York and scores a job as the assistant to one of the city’s biggest magazine editors, the ruthless and cynical Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep (A Prairie Home Companion).

With the help of one of the magazine’s fashion editors, played by Stanley Tucci (Lucky Number Slevin), she gets a complete makeover and new found confidence; however, the new look and the demands of the job forces her to alienate her friends, family and her live-in boyfriend.

Hathaway is very good in this. It’s definitely a role an actress her age and experience wants to get and the performance she wants to give right now. Streep is amazing as usual, and Tucci has a great character performance that doesn’t go over the top.

The best thing about this movie is the respect it has for itself. It so easily could have been made into this cheese-riddled Lindsey-Lohan-name-above-title type of bargain bin movie, but it had a nice fairly real story with a great cast and a decent script. Good for them. Hollywood makes the right choice. How did that happen?

The only thing not good about this picture is there are no surprises with the plot. Immediately, we know the story was going to boil down to a young woman’s integrity.

The other element which may drive some demographics away is its deep seeded material regarding the fashion world. It’s very fashion driven, so if you’re annoyed by such industry, you could potentially hate this picture. If you’re seriously into fashion and designers and the like, this movie is for you all the way.

Overall, the film is decent and worth renting. It’s nothing I’ll own, but I’m glad I gave it a chance. Hathaway needs to eat a burger. She’s looking a little too thin in this feature.
