Dream a Little Dream (1989)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
"Dream a Little Dream" is about how two lives literally collide in one man's dream state. Coleman, played by the late Jason Robards (Parenthood), is an old man searching for the key to eternal life and thinks it's buried in his unconsiousness, his "dream state." Bobby Keller, played by Corey Feldman (The Goonies), is a high school age punk who cuts through Coleman's yard on his way to school every day. Bobby's only aspiration is to make Lainie, played by the ever so cute--but who's career is severely over--Meredith Salenger (The Kiss), his girlfriend, even though she's dating one of his best friends, Joel, played by William McNamara (Chasers). One night, Coleman convinces his wife to try and meditate with him so they can enter the dream state together. They do the ritual in their back yard, where both Lainie and Bobby are using the short cut. They all collide and suddenly Coleman is in Bobby's body, and Bobby is trapped in Coleman's unconsious. A part of Coleman's wife is also trapped in Lainie. SO, Coleman must convince Bobby to rejoin his body. How? By making his life worth returning to, otherwise, he'll lose his wife forever, which turns out to be bulls**t. The movie has several funny moments and decently written characters. McNamara has a problem drinking and is an egoist. Bobby thinks little of himself and his family. Dinger, played by Corey Haim (License to Drive), is a smartass. Coleman is a retired philosopher who isn't careful what he wishes for. All of the characters are clear cut and consistent, a credit to writer Daniel Jay Franklin. "Dream a Little Dream" is the ONLY item on his resume. I also liked Marc Rocco's directing (Murder in the First). He has a knack for giving you bits of information that demonstrates where a character is within themselves, little attributes that change showing their growth. Why am I crediting the director and not the actors? Cause let's face it, it's Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, aka "The Coreys." Their depth as actors go about as deep as a waiting pool. I know their choices weren't their own, but good direction from Rocco. Feldman's performance was melodramatic and about as convincing as Jeffery Dalmer saying he's a changed man while chewing on someone's finger. Yes, I know Dalmer was killed in prison. It's a joke. The worst thing about the movie is the music. Even though I like most of the songs from ebing hooked on the movie in 1989, there is simply WAY TOO MUCH FRIGGIN MUSIC. As far as the sound department goes, this picture was like a VH1 special where they review the music videos of 1989. Rocco could have focused more on the story and less on beefing up the picture's soundtrack release. I'll blame the producers for that. The story is pretty freaking impossible. That's the other problem with the movie. It's more of a fantasy than anything. Physical matter can't just disappear into someone else's body. The old couple's bodies had to go SOMEWHERE, unless the whole movie was just one of Coleman's crazy dreams. That would have been cool and acceptable, BUT when things go back to normal, Bobby's world has changed, which doesn't make sense to that concept. Overall, the picture is loose, the characters are strong and the music gets very annoying. Salenger is a little cutie, and I wish she was still doing pictures. I don't think many movie lovers today will enjoy the severely dated material in "Dream a Little Dream." I bought it, and I'm glasd I did, but I don't think I'll be showing it to anyone. As a bit of trivia, "Dream a Little Dream" was the second-to-last movie "The Coreys" ever starred in together. Anyone know the very last one? You guess it. It was "Dream a Little Dream 2" released in 1995. I'm not even going to bother seeing THAT one. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
