Employee of the Month (2006)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
After hearing the store's transferred hottie checker always has eyes for its employee of the month, two warehouse superstore workers named Vincent, played by Dax Shepard (Without a Paddle), and Zach, played by Dane Cook (Waiting...), vie for the store's top honor. Meanwhile, Zach and hottie Amy, played by Jessica Simpson (The Dukes of Hazard), build a relationship which begins to transform him into a more productive member of the working class and not the slacker he originally was. There is nothing special about this picture, and frankly, it was kind of boring. I thought the movie's satire on these super warehouse stores was funny and it needed more of it. For example, one customer comes in and buys a casket for her still alive husband off the shelf; suggesting these stores have this item in stock is hilarious. Simpson was only present for one reason...cleavage; look pretty and don't say much. So, she didn't say much, and thus did not f**k up her role. Cook looks like he may have potential as a comedic film talent, but I'd have to see him in a GOOD comedy to say for sure. I'll be keeping an eye on him. Shepard is still a no-talent hack who can ruin every funny line that's given to him. All he has to do is say the lines written for him, but somehow he always finds a way to overplay them and make them not funny. Tim Bagley gave a great character performance as the store's manager Glen Gary. Overall, this movie missed the mark. It relied on a silly storyline which didn't even come close to hitting its potential. I'd wait for DVD on this one, and even at that, I won't guarantee you'll like it. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
