Finally a decent romantic comedy that goes out of its way to avoid genre cliches.

"Failure to Launch" is about thirty-something live-at-home son named Trip, played by Matthew McCaunghey (Saraha), whose parents setting him up with a professional motivator, played by Sarah Jessica Parker (The Family Stone), to simulate a relationship, building his confidence and social tools, so he'll finally vacate their home.

The greatest strength of this picture was its dialogue. It's dialogue was very well written and its story writing was well planned. The picture's writers did a good job of explaining why Trip was still living at home, and why his parents had been so patient and understanding up to that point. Everyone's motivations were well thought out and revealed.

McCaunghey was his usual comedic self, the same performance we saw him give in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." Parker was very spirited and loveable. I'm liking what she's bringing to the big screen post "TV's Sex in the City."

The writing and talent was skimped on the supporting cast either. Terry Bradshaw (former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and multi-Superbowl champion) made is acting debut--excluding commercials--with this movie and he did fine. He was very natural.

The biggest thing I appreciated about the movie was its ending. It's almost a law that romantic comedies lead to some sort of chase scene in the third act. Even the best comedies involving a romance last year (2005) did so, ex. "Must Love Dogs" and "The 40-Year Old Virgin;" however, this picture solved the conflict between the two main characters through talk. Parker's character was moving away and there was still a sense of urgency, but the actual chase was left out. Trip and Paula (Parker) TALKED things out which made it far more believeable.

Overall, this is a great 2006 release in a sea of pitiful Hollywood studio tax write offs. I certainly hope there are more pictures like "Failure to Launch" coming to cinemas this year.
