Ok, I liked it, but I didn't quite get into it. So, here's my crappy synopsis summary keeping that in mind.

"Hellboy" is about this scientist who leads an American WWII unit onto this Scottish island where the reincarnation of Rasputin is opening some door to hell, or someplace like hell, during which this little red monkey comes through after its destroyed.

So, many years later, this red monkey is now the title character and only used when the government has some sort of supernatural villain to be slain. All we know is, he's big, bitter and has the apatite of five lions and loves cats.

A couple of bad guys bring back Rasputin from the grave again, and there's a new effort to unlock hell since old Razzy knows Hellboy is the key to it. So what. Yea. It has lots of fighting and cool action sequences, but it's fairly hollow.

However, the humor and heart of the main and supporting characters more than make up for the comic book silliness of the film. Ron Perlmen (TV's Beauty and the Beast) plays Hellboy with a quiet frustration, as he attempts to requite his love for a fellow freak played by Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions). She does well, and I don't much like the roles she chooses. I mean, come on. The big dance number about penis sizes in "The Sweetest Thing" will never win her Academy Award® contending work.

If it weren't for the humanity of the picture, I don't think I would've liked "Hellboy" at all. However, I was kept interested throughout the picture, and I would suggest any fan of movies based on comic books to see this one.

Another strength is, the film's make up work, not only on the oversized heavily armed red monkey man, but on William Hurt (Rob Roy) who plays the scientist/father after the picture's prologue. I didn't even recognize him.
