I really enjoyed this movie, and I will own it; however, the stories are far from new.

Set during the prohibition era, at a small-town Georgia speakeasy, a performer and club manager named Rooster, played by Antwan A. Patton (aka Big Boi), must contend with a rising bootlegger-turned-gangster, played by Terrance Howard (Hustle & Flow), who has eyes on the club.

Meanwhile, Rooster's childhood friend and piano player Percival, played by Andre Benjamin (Be Cool), must choose between his love for a fledgling singer named Angel, played by Paul Patton (Hitch), or his obligations to his father.

The awesome speak-easy music by Outkast (Big Boi and Andre 3000) and dance numbers are the main reason to see this picture. There were a handful of other musical numbers outside of the club which got my toes tapping as well; however, the picture could have been more a musical and less dramatic.

Since there is very little acting experience among the main actors, they--as producers--should've put their best foot forward--being their musical abilities--instead of trying to act there way through the story.

The two main storylines have been seen over-and-over and gives us nothing new this time around. Several scenes could have been cut.

Paula Patton is gorgeous and I'm looking forward to seeing her in other pictures. Faizon Love (Made) also gave a great character performance as the club owner until he is killed in Act 1.

Overall, I thought this was a good debut for writer-director Bryan Barber, who's also directing credits are confined to Outkast's music videos. This was his first film. If you like Outkast, definitely see "Idlewild," if not, stay away.
