Any movie that's theme song is sung by "Weird" Al Yankovic should tell what kind of movie it is. "Johnny Dangerously" is another classic 1980's movie that is a spoof on mob movies of the past. This is super silly and fun and if you don't like this movie you need to lighten up.

Johnny Kelly, played by Michael Keaton (Batman,) is forced into a life of crime to pay for his neurotic mother who is always ill. He takes on the name Johnny Dangerously, to hind his identity from his mother and brother, and joins the Dundee gang run by Jacko Dundee, played by Peter Boyle (Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,) who is at war with rival gang run by Roman Maroni. Added to this Johnny is helping his younger brother Tommy get through law school. Eventually Johnny inherits the gang from Jacko and not only has to fight Maroni, but his brother who is now the D.A., and Danny Vermin, played by Joe Piscapo (,) who is a lieutenant in the Dundee gang. Things go bad when Tommy finds out that Johnny is a gang member and tries to prosecute him.

If this was a serious movie it would have been awful, but writers Harry Colomby, Jeff Harris, Bernie Kukoff, and Norman Steinberg kept the satire funny and original giving some of the best lines to Johnny's mom Ma Kelly, played by Maureen Stapleton (Cocoon.) Also the character of Roman Maroni was farging hilarious. One of the funnier characters created in 80's movies. It was very good situation comedy as well as spoken comedy, a good mix of physical and mental humor. I would not call it a Zucker Brothers funny, but more of an Jim Carrey funny.

In describing what I mean, Ma Kelly is attending Tommy's graduation with Johnny and his girlfriend when Ma Kelly looks to Lil and says, "You have gotten to be like a daughter to me and I wanna share something with you." Lil says, "Aww, what's that Mom Kelly?" Ma Kelly replies, "I go both ways." This is great writing for a movie that is supposed to be in the 1930's. In fact that is a joke repeated often, way to many technological advances for the 1930's but its apart of the gag.

This is a great 80's movie that should be in everybody's collection.
