Jurassic Park III (2001)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
So Sam Neil (Wimbledon) reprises his role as Dr. Alan Grant, and he agrees to do a survey mission, via
airplane, on Isla Sorna (that would be the second island in Lost World: Jurassic Park) to look for dinosaurs
at the request of a married couple Paul and Amanda Kirby, played by William H. Macy (Fargo) and Tea Leoni (Spanglish.)
What Dr. Grant doesn't know is that they are actually looking for the couple's kid who went para-sailing with
Amanda Kirby's fiancée, we find out the Kirby's are divorced, and they basically trick Dr. Grant into landing
on the island. Within five minutes of landing they are all running for their lives and attempt to fly out,
only to have the plane damaged by a dinosaur. So now the married couple, Dr Grant, his assistant, and the
other two red shirts, try to escape with their lives.
Sam Neil is quite good in this role. He maintains the belief of the character from the first movie
and still has that charming personality that was so enjoyable in the first movie. William H. Macy
and Tea Leoni are also fun to watch. The red shirts are just that red shirts and die way to quickly.
The kid was just as annoying as the kid in the second movie, Lost World.
Now, let's get to the laundry list of plot holes in the story. First of all, there is a new dinosaur
nemesis, the Spinosaurus, which is the reason why the plane crashes on take off, the plane clips it,
and also we are introduced to its dominance because it kills off a T-Rex in the first 10 minutes after
they are stuck. However, Isla Sorna is the Island in Lost World and not once did we see this creature,
even though there were many more men, and a lot more noise for it to go investigate in the second movie
so where was it? Also, the creature is powerful enough to break through thick metal poles and titanium
fencing, yet it can't break down the metal doors to the human part of the bird cage. Why?
Speaking of the bird or pterodactyl cage, again where was it in the second movie? I am also guessing that
it weighs 400 to 500 lbs so I don't think a rickety cat walk is going to support its weight. Yet it does,
how?
The boy, played by Trevor Morgan (The Patriot,) was a believable character except for one minor detail,
no ten year old is going to survive on that island for eight minutes let alone 8 weeks. No Way.
Because of these story holes, the movie is very mediocre, and not that intense. I wish that they do
not make the next movie, but I don't think my wish will come true. I just hope that Sam Neil or Jeff
Goldblum will not be in it.
