This movie is basically "The Mighty Ducks," but with Will Ferrell and not as much about the kids.

"Kicking and Screaming" is about one father trying not to treat his son the way his own father did, especially when it comes to sports. Phil, played by Ferrell (Anchorman), has just taken over coaching his son's soccer team, the Tigers, after his son was traded from the Gladiators, of whom Phil's dad, played by Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall (Assassination Tango) coaches. Eventually, Phil's resentment towards his father makes winning everything to him, and he ends up alienating his son Sam in the process.

Will Ferrell is once again the only reason to watch this movie. Unfortunately, the filmmakers knew this also and centered every bit of material on him. This picture is proof you can have a thoroughly mediocre script, hire a talented comedian and somehow you get a comedy selling out showings.

I thought the writing in this picture was stale, which didn't surprise me, seeing it was Leo Benvenuti and Steve Rudnick. This was the genius pair of writers who penned "The Santa Clause," the only movie I ever went to with three other people and ALL OF US fell asleep to it. No bulls**t. That actually happened.

I did enjoy the backstory behind Ferrell and Duvall's father and son characters. However, after seeing the movie "Parenthood," it's difficult for other dysfunctional comedy father and son pairs to measure up. The best I can say was, this picture, in those regards, was a good attempt.

Since the picture was all about Ferrell's character development and growth, we knew the inevitable happy ending was coming. And not only did it show up, it came in record time. This picture had the fastest avenue to a happy ending in movie history maybe.

A handful of laughs are given with the help of NFL Hall of Fame coach Mike Ditka, formerly of the Chicago Bears. However, Ditka's rivalry with Duvall's character was in complete need of backstory. They are described as mortal enemies, but we are never given a reason why. I thought that aspect of Ditka's character was a hollow vehicle to get him to accept a job as Ferrell's assistant coach.

Ferrell was very funny in this, and because of him, I laughed a many times. However, overall, I thought the movie was nothing special. Just another spotlight for our generations' latest and greatest of the comedic actors.

Benn - Where's the Humanity?

I thought the movie was fairly good because of Will Ferrell and the writing was funny. The story was unoriginal and you could have predicted the ending after the first five minutes, but it is still worthy of a matinee showing at the movie theaters.

Will Ferrell stars as Phil Weston, a non-athletically gifted father who becomes the coach of his son's soccer team after his son gets traded by Phil's father, the grandfather, Buck Weston, played by Robert Duvall. Phil being inept, hires legendary football coach Mike Ditka to help coach the team. As the team gets better, Phil's desire to beat his father takes over the team and the kids are winning but not having any fun as Phil becomes what he dislikes, his father.

This movie should pretty much put the nail in the coffin of the question who is the best current comedic actor. Ferrell never misses a beat, brings energy to every scene, and has mastered the art of physical comedy like no one since a young Chevy Chase.

The rest of the movie is very cookie cutter, but that's ok since the target audience is the 8 to 10 year old child. Sometimes with these kinds of movies, the previews have all of the jokes in them. However, with this movie there were plenty of laughs and never was dull. I liked the addition of Mike Ditka into the movie, it wasn't a difficult role but he did a nice job his first time up to bat.

Director Jesse Dylan did not screw anything up in his directing. Like I said the story was very unoriginal and screenwriters Leo Benvenuti and Steve Rudnick created a very unoriginal story but there were able to keep the laughs coming, which was a good thing.

This is not a spectacular movie, Will Ferrell is, but the movie itself is rather ho-hum. But I will give it the benefit of the doubt and recommend this movie. You could do a lot worse this summer.
