Brian Felts Lost in Space (1998)

This movie is supposedly based on the TV series of the same name in the 1960's. I don't remember that one but I do know that with few exceptions this movie pretty much blows. There is no story, except for a 1990's environmental PC crappy one, and the action sucks too. Even the bad guy is more annoying than bad. Unless you are the ultimate fan of the TV series or a fan of Matt LeBlanc, stay away from the movie.

The story is that the Earth has had all of its resources used up and an earth mission to another planet that is habitable is undertaken led by genius scientist John Robinson, played by William Hurt (The Village), and the rest of his genius family. Piloting the Robinson ship is Major West, played by Matt Leblanc (TV's Friends) and the ship also has a stowaway Dr. Smith played by Gary Oldman (Batman Begins.) Smith creates the problem because he is a separatist (for who I am not really sure) and he sabotages the robot and causes a huge fight that screws up the navigation computer. So they are lost in space, neat isn't it.

The one big problem in this movie is that with the exception of Leblanc, there is real no other actor in this that could or should be in an action movie. The rest of the cast is headlined by Heather Graham, and Minnie Driver, not two names you will see on the list of action movies. Neither will you see William Hurt, the statue that talks, or Gary Oldman, who is one of my more favorite actors but this movie just isn't for him. Matt Leblanc was the only one that fit, and I wish he would do more action movies because that genre is missing a young action actor. Let's face it Harrison Ford, Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood are too old, or they have been relegated to the B list movies (see Stallone's last five movies.) I think LeBlanc fits the part perfectly. He is young, handsome, and has a good sense of comedic timing. Stop doing TV and do action movies, Matt!

The directing by Stephen Hopkins was very anti-climatic. There was no suspense leading up to the 'climatic' scene and the talents of LeBlanc were wasted. The screenwriter Akiva Goldsman should have had his testicles shorn and forced to watch the musical Rent everyday for 1 year as punishment for this movie. But since he has written "I, Robot" and the upcoming "Da Vinci Code," I will for give him for this. Although since he also wrote one of the five worst movies of all time, "Batman & Robin," his punishment should be to act out all of the scenes from the movie "The Pillow Book" in a prison full of men who haven't seen a woman in twenty years.

Anyway, like I said, this movie pretty much blows. Stay away from it if you can, wait for LeBlanc to do another action movie.
