May (2002)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
Wow, was this a movie weird. It is by no means stellar and a little slow, but this movie about a loner who loses her sense of reality is almost interesting enough to watch. Oh yeah, Anna Farris is in it and she plays a lesbian and that right there is worth the rental price.
May, played by Angela Bettis (Girl, Interrupted,) is a plain looking young woman who is psychologically scarred by her mother's attempt to hide her lazy eye as a child. As a child she is given a doll that was made by her mother when she was a child to be her friend and she passes it on to May so she can also have a friend. May's inability to interact with people begins to shake her emotionally as she tries and fails at having a relationship with a mechanic named Adam, played by Jeremy Sisto (Wrong Turn,) and her co-worker at the veterinary office Polly, played by Anna Farris (Just Friends.) As May becomes more unstable the glass that is holding her doll starts to shatter and when it finally breaks, May decides to create a new friend out of the best pieces of the people in her life.
I like how the story was given enough background so that you can see why May developed into a unique individual. Combined they were only maybe four scenes but it showed what can happen when a parent doesn't realize the trauma that they can do to a child, even when they are not yelling screaming or hollering.
I loved Angela Bettis in this movie. She was very creepy from the beginning of the movie to the end and the feeling never went away. Her particular attention to the characters strange obsession with her friends body parts made the character all the more weird. There was also a hint of sadness with the character because she was trying to have a "normal" life as she tries to have a relationship with Adam first and then with Polly but when they end up using her, May's inability to cope sends her over the edge.
I also loved Anna playing the ditzy blond in a brunette's body. The fact that she was a lesbian in the movie made it all the better. The 'sex' scene between May and Polly was very tame (no skin) but it was still hot to see Anna kiss another woman. The scene was also a little unnerving because the entire time Polly is kissing and rubbing May, may is touching Polly's neck, which happens to be the first part she collects when May goes on her killing spree. Alas, Anna is killed, but knowing that she was a lesbian made makes it hot.
The ending is very anti-climatic because it is very tame for blood and violence and gore. The ending was the weakest part of the movie because you knew where May's character was going after the first 30 minutes of the movie and when she starts to kill it was all to neat and easy. I especially have a hard time believing that this tiny fragile woman could get to Adam, even if he was drunk. The good thing about the ending was that Bettis kept the character strong and even though you knew what was happening, the sheer creepiness of the character made up for the lack of suspense.
Overall I say if you got nothing better to do on a Sunday after noon, no football on, and its August or February and there are no good movies out, go ahead and rent the movie. There is a decent performance given by Angela Bettis and like I said at the beginning of the review, Anna Farris is a Lesbian in the movie….Woo Hoo.
