John, Brad Pitt (Troy), and Jane, Angelina Jole (Taking Lives) play a married couple who are bored with
each other AND were both hiding the fact that they were both deadly assassins who work for rival companies.
When they discover each one is a spy they both think that the other was a plant to watch the other, so
naturally they try to kill each other. Except love conquers all and they are forced to protect each other
when both agencies put a contract on the each of them.
What is so surprising to me was the relationship between Jole and Pitt. There was never a time when
they seemed like they didn't belong on the screen together. The chemistry was great and so was the
timing which is so important in comedic action movies. Of course if half of the humors are true,
that they were banging each other while Pitt was married to Aniston, then this is no big surprise.
The best thing about the script by Simon Kinberg (X-Men 3) is that he keeps the husband/wife relationship
consistent even after they find out that each is a spy. The constant criticizing done by each other on how
to drive or how to shoot and keeping it in the realm of the husband/wife bickering was wonderful. Amazing
considering that this came from the same guy who wrote Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. A very good effort.
Vince Vaughn (Dodgeball), playing Eddie, was in this movie and gave a very steady performance, a Vince
Vaughn performance if you will. However, I wish the script had made him the bad guy in the end. Since
he was a co-worker of Pitt's character, it would have been clichéd but Eddie should have been the main bad
guy at the end of the movie. The end lacked a main evil doer to focus on and his part would was tailored
made for the part. Oh well.
The action scenes brought this movie way down. Whether it was the high speed chase or the gunfight at the
OK coral in the last scene, none of it was believable so I actually thought the action took away from the
movie. Weird for the action freak that is me.
As I sum up I will say that as an interesting side note, the part of Mrs. Smith was originally going to
be played by Nicole Kidman. Now fortunately Nicole realized she was horribly miscast and so she dropped,
but it allowed Jole to come to a film that has a lot more foundation then most of her recent movies. Angelina
can act and she showed it in this movie, now she just needs to continue to find these kinds of movies, oh and
stop being a freak in public, and her acting reputation can improve. God knows that it will help her father
Jon Voight last a few more years if she does this.
You will laugh a lot at this movie and it is enjoyable, just try not to let the action sequences annoy
you, it's a decent movie. Oh ya, Brad Pitt was in the movie and he gave as Brad Pitt gives but I still
don't know why he dumped Anniston for Jole.
Brian - the Naked Gun I really liked this picture far more than I expected. When I saw the trailer, I figured it was just another corny summer action pic. However, it ended up being this high concept comedy which remained very consistent. Director Doug Limon did an excellent job of making sure the comedy aspects of this film were never pushed aside. Even during the picture's ridiculous action sequences, the humor was always present, as well as the main characters' dynamic. I loved the first and last shot relationship this picture had, and found myself laughing early and quite a bit. Overall, "Mr and Mrs Smith" is probably the pleasant surprise of the summer for me, unless "Fantastic Four" somehow floors me…yeah, right. THIS picture has pretty people, with good comedic chemistry, shooting lots of weapons and doing it. If that's not quality high concept cinema, then I don't know what is. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
