North Country (2005)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
"North Country" is supposedly based on the first case of a sexually hostile work environment in the US. to go to trial.
One woman, Josey Aimes, played by Charlize Theron (Monster) led the case, brave enough to stand up and risk the life she was rebuilding with her kids to take on the mining corporation. The fictional corporation's leaders continued to turn a deaf ear when the women of the mine were being harassed to a variety of inhumane extents.
I liked the movie to some extent and there were several fine performances from it, but none of which should be hit with an Academy Award.
My problems with the movie lay in its length. The subplot between mother and son got too much screen time. The harassment went on and on, but didn't mount until Josie was physically attacked, not raped, which made her quit and file suit. There were moments of a great movie, but mostly it was filled with sequences of little necessity. It was a bit of a struggle to get through it.
The ending in the courtroom was also very overly dramatic and put me off a bit.
I'll even suggest going to see this picture, but just know it is a FICTIONAL telling of the first case of sexually harassment won in the US, but not the actual.
The original case was in 1984 - Jensen vs Eveleth Mines. The actual lawsuit took until 1998 to settle; 14 years after the harassment suits were filed. You can imagine how condensed and peppered this movie is just by that. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
