Office Space (1999)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
Peter Gibbons, played by Ron Livingston (Little Black Book,) hates his job as a computer techie, has a
girlfriend that is cheating on him, and is completely depressed about life, even though his friends Samir,
played by Ajay Naidu (The Honeymooners,) and Michael Bolton, played by David Herman (Kicking and Screaming)
try to cheer him up. Peter's girlfriend convinces him to go to a hypno-therapist and while he is in a deep
trance, the therapist dies of a heart attack. So Peter is stuck in this trance where he is in his happy
place and acts accordingly.
This movie has some of the best writing for a simple comedy ever. Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis and
Butthead, also directed this movie and came up with wonderful writing. He makes ordinary characters funny.
The receptionist is one, Peter's boss Bill Lundbergh, played by Gary Cole (Dodgeball,) is everyone's supervisor.
A guy who is ignoring what you are saying even though you are staring right at him/her and saying "uh-huh" but
continue to ask the question you have already answered or comments on something you have already stated.
The writing also is excellent in that the characters each have certain quirks that make them hilarious.
Lundbergh always says, "yeah, Hi" or "Um, yeah", the receptionist and her repetition, the character Milton
Waddams, played by Stephen Root (Dodgeball,) is perfect in his quite, mumbling, and passive behavior. Every
character in this movie is real, and not even over the top real, that is what is so good about the writing,
the humor comes from ordinary people in everyday situations.
I do not like the use of Rap music in the movie, except for when the skinny white guy Michael Bolton
plays the heavy Rap in his car acting like a gangster, that is until a black guy walks buy his car,
and he quickly locks his doors and turns down the music, classic! But as back ground music it gets
really old.
I could go on and on, but if you haven't seen this movie this is definitely a must see, especially
if you have worked in an office environment. Oh by the way, Jennifer Aniston is in it too, and as
good as she acts, she is probably the weakest link because her character is so boring.
If you disagree, hey, all I got to say is, "Why should I change my name, he's the one who sucks."
