Brian Felts Payback (1999)

This is the kind of movie that can be described as fun. Its fun to watch and probably fun to make and act in I would assume. Mel Gibson (Signs) stars as a bank robber who gets double crossed by his partner and his wife and has $70,000 stolen from him and his is left for dead.

Porter (Gibson) recovers from his gun shot wounds and begins to work his way back to his partner, Val Resnick, played by Gregg Henry (Star Trek: Insurrection.) When Porter catches up to Resnick, he discovers that all of the money Resnick took was given to The Outfit, a crime organization so Resnick can join it. So Porter has to go to members of the Outfit to try and get his money and stay alive as much as possible.

The movie and story are both quite simple. This is nothing more than a revenge movie. But the writing is quite funny and the timing is terrific. The action is straight forward and the movie won't win any special effects awards. There is nothing to this movie except that it is fun, a guilty pleasure if you will. It is great to see Mel Gibson play the classic anti-hero character from 40's and 50's cinema. It's almost as if he took his character from the "Lethal Weapon" movies and crossed that line from being good to bad, but still likable. Is this movie as good without him? Probably not, but it still would have been entertaining, even if it went straight to video.

You should rent this movie and enjoy it. It won't be making you forget the classics, but it sure will make you feel good for an hour or two.
