Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
In trouble once again, Cpt. Jack Sparrow, again played by Johnny Depp, now owes his soul as an unpaid debt to the infamous Davy Jones, played by Bill Nighy (Love Actually), and his army of sea-phantoms. Now, Sparrow must find a way to save himself from becoming on of them, but once again, using Will Turner, again played by Orlando Bloom, who needs Jack to help get his betrothed Elizabeth Swan, again played by Kiera Knightly, released from prison. The first 20-25 minutes of this latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment is pretty choppy; however, once all the characters' goals were established, the picture took off. Director Gore Verbinksi created a highly enjoyable film with sensational staging. The best sequence is the three-way sword fight between Sparrow, Turner and former Commador Norington. The entire sequence on that Island where the Dead Man's Chest was located was superbly put together. Be warned. This picture gets pretty dark in places. This second POR tale is just as dark as the first, but there are handful of moments that teeter on the derranged i.e. Sparrow biting the nail off of a severed toe. That was sick. Like the first, the production design and costuming was great, and the cast worked together wonderfully as an ensemble. This movie deserves the response it has received from audiences and from the box offices. This is one film in the last year or so which movie goers should ge excited to see more than once.
