The Prestige (2006)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
Alfred Borden, played by Christian Bale (Batman Begins), and Rupert Angiers, played by Hugh Jackman (X-Men movies), play rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London who covertly and not-so-covertly battle each other for trade secrets, which lead to Angiers’ eventual demise.
Twists and turns are wall to wall as Angiers obsesses over finding the secret to Borden’s trick called ‘The Transported Man,’ leading him to ask famed Russian scientist Nichola Tesla to help him duplicate the trick with science rather than magic.
The performances in this period piece were solid, especially Bale and Jackman, but even David Bowie as Tesla was fun.
The writing did exceptionally well to set up all of the story twists in Act Three. It even dangles the plot’s secrets in front of you, but we (the audience) refuses to accept them. It’s a very crafty venture from writer-director Christopher Nolan and co-writer brother Johnathan Nolan.
Overall, “The Prestige” is a fun intense mystery thriller that’s good for a date out or night in with a rental.
