Swingers
reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell

Actor and established screenwriter John Favreau shines in this independent comedy about being single and on the hunt in Los Angeles. "Swingers" stands as one of my most preferred pictures released during my college years.

"Swingers" follows the life of struggling actor and comedian Mike Peters still hurting from a break up with his six year long girlfriend. While looking at the life he had created himself in LA after moving from New York City, we meet the outgoing aspiring actor Trent and his borderline personality friend Sue. Mike makes his best attempt to rejoin the singles' scene while taking tips from his new friends, as well as support from his longtime friend and also aspiring actor Rob.

The storyline for "Swingers" is very simple and almost non-existent. However, Favreau's characters are what make the picture so gripping.

Favreau (Made, Daredevil) himself takes the lead as Mike, while the picture is directed by the now established Doug Liman (The Bourne Supremacy). Among the solid supporting cast is Vince Vaughn (Dodgeball) and Ron Livingston (Little Black Book) as Rob. Heather Graham also makes an appearance as the woman to finally snap Mike's slump in the picture's third act.

The comedy of the film is priceless, using the group's coloquialisms to define the kind of people they are. Favreau and Limon follow the perspective of Mike with an awesome eye, which changes as Mike begins to become more confident.

For example, Vaughn's character Trent is seen as this perfect ladies-man, who can do no wrong with women and men. However, after he successfully aquires a woman's interest finally, he then sees Trent as a loud mouthed obnoxious idiot who embarrasses himself with the next woman they run into.

The pacing gets dodgey at times, but the dialogue is some of the punchiest I've ever heard. It carries the film to great enjoyment and cult following status. Not many persons have heard of "Swingers," but those who HAVE never forgot seeing it. If you haven't, rent it now!
