Taken (2009)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
I was a little skeptical about Liam Neeson being a bad ass super spy who kills without remorse or regret. I mean this guy is Oscar Schindler, Rob Roy, Michael Collins, not John McClain, John Rambo, or any Arnold Schwarzenegger character. But it works because of the writing by one of the better action writers in the business Luc Besson, and the story is about eradicating real world evil, which I will get behind any time.
Liam Neeson (Schindler's list) is retired super spy Bryan Mills who begrudgingly lets his 16 year old daughter go to Paris with a friend. When the daughter and friend get kidnapped by Albanians with the intent of using them in the sex slave industry, Mills goes on a manhunt that destroys parts of Paris and eliminates most of the elements that create the slave trade business.
Luc Besson, the co-writer of this film, knows how to write action films. His resume includes, Le Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, Kiss of the Dragon, and the Transporter movies. He knows how to mix car chases with fight scenes and just has lots of fun. A plus in this script is that he doesn't go to absurd with the action scenes like he as done with the Transporter films. I won't say everything is believable, but there isn't anything that is absolutely ludicrous. Throw in the fact that Liam Neeson is an excellent actor and knows to stay within his limits, the action is very enjoyable.
I was not bothered by a whole lot in this film. But I would be remiss to not mention the annoying acting of the ultra hottie Famke Janssen (X-Men films) who played Brian Mills ex-wife Lenora. She decided to channel the inner bitch that she has and every scene she was in was annoying. I almost didn't want to see Mills succeed in saving his daughter just so the wife can learn a valuable lesson. But that wouldn't make for a fun movie.
The last reason I will give for me liking this film is that the good guy goes and kills a lot of bad guys, the bad guys being people who kidnap women and put them in the slave sex trade industry. Since this is a real world problem, it is nice to see some bad guys buying it, even if it is fiction.
This is an enjoyable film and I do recommend people watching the film on the big screen. It will take a little getting used to watching Liam Neeson kick butt, but its ok, you will like it.
