Brian Felts Thelma & Louise

I had vowed never to see this movie because I always thought why would I want to see a movie that is the beacon for angry women throughout this great land of ours? But because I now write movie reviews for a website and we have an area that has a reader requested titles I must do a review of the movie. Well, to be honest I was not surprised by the content of the movie, but I was surprised at how it had me interested in the ending of the movie.

The story starts out with two women, Louise, played by Susan Sarandon (Alfie) and Thelma, played by Geena Davis (Stuart Little,) are on a mini vacation when the run across a man at a night club who attempts to rape Thelma in the parking lot. Louise ends up shooting him dead and the two go on the run. Along the way Thelma falls for this "student" named J.D., played by Brad Pitt (Ocean's 12,) who subsequently steals the $6700 that Louise got from her boyfriend to get them to Mexico. At this point the two women rely on each other until they drive off into the sunset.

My man problem with the movie is that with the exception of Harvey Keitel's character, all the men in this movie are the stereotypical bastard, a**hole, c**ksucker, that you would find in the standard men hater guide. Thelma's husband Darryl, played by Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore,) is a verbal abusing husband who is cheating on her. Louise's boyfriend Jimmy, played by Michael Madsen (Kill Bill,) is afraid of commitment and is only able to propose to Louise when he thinks he is losing her. Then of course there is the guy in the bar that tries to rape Thelma in the parking lot. Oh and the cute guy J.D. that steals the money after tricking and f*cking Thelma, AND the trucker who is being rude and obnoxious on the entire trip. I mean why does this women empowerment movie require every man to be an a**hole. Why does the catalyst for the women to be on the run and start their passage to "independence" need to be a rapist? I mean I am all for the shooting of the son-of-a-bitch but why does it have to be rape? Why do all the cops but one have to assume the worst? This is why I didn't want to see the movie and why I wasn't expecting to like it.

But the acting by the ladies was quite good. I thought Sarandon was a very believable character in that she started off quite strong but by the time the money was stolen she had completely broken down, and was lost. I didn't quite believe Davis in her job just because her character was a colossal f*ck up for hour and half and then becomes super strong.

The ending of the movie, when the two girls drive off into the sunset, I still don't understand even after having a wonderful women tell me why they did it. I guess if it was two guys the thing to do would have been to turn around and drive at the cops with guns a blazing. But I guess by driving off the cliff, they get to leave on their own terms. At first I thought I got what she said, but the more I think the more confused I get, kind of like every relationship I have ever had.

Go ahead and watch this movie is you haven't, it's not my kind of movie, but it is better than I thought it would be.
