This movie is a guilty pleasure for me because I find Tornadoes fascinating and I had a big thing for Helen Hunt and she is in a wife beater through out the entire movie. The writing is very average and the story is too corny to be believable. But I still love it.

Scientists Jo, played by Helen Hunt (As Good as it Gets) and Bill Harding, played by Bill Paxton (Titanic) try to get their experiment, which collects data, into the mouth of a tornado while a competing team of scientists led by Jonas Miller, played by Cary Elwes (Saw,) try to get their duplicate experiment up first.

This story is not very good, which is surprising because it is based on a Michael Crichton book. But the whole concept of competing scientist, one group trying to help humanity and the other trying to make millions, is rally unbelievable. Also, the situations that the Harding's constantly find themselves in, meaning that they run across five twisters in a twenty four hour period, is also unlikely. Scientists run around for days to try and see one good one.

Cary Elwes was also a draw back because his southern (?) accent was annoying and not very real. I like him as an actor but this was obviously a paycheck for him.

However, I still like the movie because the special effects are cool and Helen Hunt is attractive. The Twisters in the movie are exciting, especially the first time you see the movie. Oh and did I say Helen Hunt is hot.

Jan De Bont directed this movie and he could not capture the thrill that he had in his Speed movie. He had two quality actors and it was obvious that both Paxton and especially Helen Hunt were not enjoying themselves because the acting wasn't very good. Of course the acting wasn't great in Speed but the tension was much better. De Bont just isn't a good director, cinematographer yes, but for directing I tell you to see his next movie, The Haunting.

I can't stop without writing about Jamie Gertz's (The Lost Boys) acting as Bill Paxton's love interest. It was annoying, lame, and every time she spoke it was like listening to Celine Dion singing while her toes are being smashed. Just painful.

I will tell you to watch this movie because it has great special effects and it has Helen Hunt. But it isn't very good.
