Underworld: Evolution (2006)reviewed by Brian "The Naked Gun" Felts
Wow, another decent sequel to a bad original movie, Underworld 2 is incredibly average but it is better than the first one. This movie actually has a story that you can follow and I can almost care about the characters. A bonus is also that unlike the first movie, the hotness that is Kate Beckinsale actually helps this movie, so that's a good thing.
Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale (The Aviator,) is now on the run after killing off the nemesis of the first movie. With her in tow is the hybrid Vampire/Werewolf friend and lover Michael Corvin, played by Scott Speedman (Underworld,) and they are on the run, trying to find the first vampire, Marcus, played by Tony Curran (Pearl Harbor,) to help explain what is going on. However, what they don't know is that Marcus is hunting them because he is looking for the last known whereabouts of his brother who happens to be the very first werewolf. Selene's dead family is the last ones to know where the werewolf is imprisoned and Marcus can pull that memory out of Selene's head by drinking her blood. Selene and Michael must enlist the help of Marcus's father, Corvinus, played by Sir Derek Jacobi (Hamlet,) to try to stop Marcus from bringing his brother back and bringing terror back to humanity.
If you have seen the first movie, the second movie actually explains a lot of story lines and plot points that the first one did not. I actually want to go back and watch the first movie again. The story, as well as the characters, has much more depth than they did the first time around. They explain why there is the feud between the two species and what the relationship between the werewolf and the vampire, the bad guys in the first movie, meant and why they seemed to be betraying their own kind. The writers were able to explain all of this by introducing the plot of Marcus and his brother and how they came to be. I must admit that it was much easier to follow and much better than the first one.
However, what I did not like was the constant use of flashbacks in the movie. It seemed like every five minutes there was a flashback explaining something that is going on in the current movie with what happened in the last movie. There even a few times where the flashback that is explaining what is going on at that particular moment of the movie happened in the previous scene. I mean I know the audience for this kind of movie as the attention span of a newborn baby, but give us some credit. I would like to be able to solve some plot twists on my own. This was a major drawback to the presentation of the story and was annoying halfway through the movie.
I would like to take a moment to talk about the beautifulness that is Kate Beckinsale. She is quite stunning in her tight black outfits and is quite a turn on in her fight scenes. Add to this that the writers added to her character some depth and her ability to use it made her into a stunning beauty that easily put her at the top of the list for best BBMC hotty award for 2006.
Overall, I can tell you that if you loved the first movie, why I don't know, you are probably having bathing in your own fluids over the second one. While it is 100% better than the first, it is still a very average Sci-Fi movie that is enjoyable to watch, once.
