I was extremely skeptical of seeing this picture because of JLO's presence, but miraculously, she doesn't f**k the movie up entirely. She actually tried to do a decent job, but par for the course, she wasn't believable.

"An Unfinished Life" is about Jean Gilyson, played by Jennifer Lopez (Dance With Me), and her daughter Mitch, escaping the violent hand of a jealous boyfriend, end up at Jean's father-in-law's ranch in Wyoming. Her father-in-law Einar Gilkyson, played by Robert Redford (The Last Castle), doesn't care for Jean for some reason, but didn't want his granddaughter, whom he didn't know he had to be homeless.

Einar spends the rest of the movie trying to forgive Jean for being responsible for his son's death. As a subplot, Einar encounters a brown bear that mauled his ranch hand and friend Mitch, played by Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), who is now permanently disabled. The bear ends up in a petting zoo--I know--and becomes a symbolic figure of Einar's bitterness.

The movie was extremely well made and has a great cast, JLO aside. Redford did a great job at the gristled old man act. Freeman was the voice of reason, but played a quiet understanding towards Redford's character. The scene with both of them were great.

Another great performance came from Becca Gardner as granddaughter Griff Gilkyson. Obviously, the character had been through a lot and met plenty of people who abused her mother and maybe her. I thought she represented this upbringing very well. It was far more believable she would be respectful of Einar than copping an attitude with him. I really glad they played her that way, and I liked watching Redford and Gardner develop chemistry as the movie progressed.

Josh Lucas (Stealth) also did well as the town sheriff who becomes involved with Jean. Writers Mark Spragg and Virginia Korus Spragg did well to find an interesting inner motivation for Jean's character as to why she hooked up with Sheriff Curtis.

Overall, the movie is heavily dramatic. There are a couple of moments to laugh at, but it's a down and dirty tense character drama. If that's not your thing, stay away. Otherwise, even JLO's lack of acting, training and ability couldn't f**k up how interesting and well made this picture is.
