Working Girl (1988)reviewed by Benn "Where's the Humanity?" Farrell
"Working Girl" is about a jersey girl named Tess, played by Melanie Griffith (Bonfire of the Vanities), who is eager to make her way through the business world with a community college education and the will to learn. Tess eventually gets hooked up with an acquisitions and merging tycoon named Katharine, played by Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist), who steals one of Tess' merging deals before breaking her leg on a ski trip. While Katharine is recouping, Tess cuts her hair and seeks out Jack Trainor, played by Harrison Ford (Clear and Present Danger), another player to help her put her deal together pretending to be working at Katharine's level and from her office. The picture's dialogue from writer Kevin Wade is very bright and workable for the actors. I also like how it says people don't need high-end educational degrees to have great ideas; however, it DOES show she didn't posses the mechanics to get the job done, thus seeking out Trainor. Ford was great, as always. Some scenes were much like any stilted performance he's given in many projects on his resume, but other scenes showed his control and high talent. Weaver also gave a high quality performance; however, Griffith fell flat. She has this way of delivering every line with this stupid blonde deadpan stereotype that got on my nerves quicker than a rabid monkey beating on a saucepan. Griffith's performance worked for this movie, since she was playing the jersey girl stereotype, but she could have had more consistency. Her accent faded in and out. Joan Cusack played her best friend Cyn, also a jersey girl, and acted circles around Griffith. I would have rather seen Rebecca DeMornay in the role. She was a hot commodity at the time, the right age and she's extremely talented. Oh well. I also have a problem with movies where a person's ONLY aspirations are for advancing their career. I would have preferred Tess to have an inner motivation which advancing her career may have helped achieve, maybe just to improve her quality of life. I just wanted her to want more. This picture is one of Mike Nichols' (Postcards from the Edge) best. His pacing with the story was great, and he gave just enough to the romance between Tess and Jack. Great choices. Another fun aspect of this movie is the amount of supporting actors who are now name-above-title talent, like Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) as Mick, Tess' boyfriend in Jersey and Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) as a coke head executive looking to nail Tess Oliver Platt (The Ice Harvest) played Tess' first boss who set her up with the man, Olympia Dukakis (Steel Magnolias) and Nora Dunn (TV's SNL). Well…I guess Nora Dunn isn't exactly name-above-title, but you get the idea. Overall, I think "Working Girl" is still worth seeing, even though parts of the production are dated, especially the music being from the 1980s. The picture is well acted, Griffith excluded, and very well directed as usual from Nichols. Benn - Where's the Humanity? |
